PostSubject: Elective List   Elective List EmptyWed Jun 09, 2010 4:44 pm

http://www.science.mcmaster.ca/isci/registered-students/course-timetable?start=2

Here is the elective chart showing the possible electives. I have a list clarifying this chart below.

This might be an incomplete list (it often takes some work and exploration to find a course that fits), as the freeing of the labs creates more opportunities. If you find another elective that works post it on the forum or e-mail Chiara so she can update the chart.

As you can tell, because of iSci's intensive schedule, most of your first choices (maybe even your top 3 choices) probably don't fit... don't worry, it was the same for all of us as well. And you will likely learn something cool in whatever course you take.

To see the full list, check out: https://isci.forumotion.com/isci-2014-f22/possible-electives-course-descriptions-t171.htm

(I've separated it, to keep this discussion a bit less congested)

Thanks for this Prateek! Very useful. I'm going to take philosophy and the sciences first term and linear algebra second term, I think. But yes, thank you!

Thanks for the help! Do we have to wait until June 27th to select courses like the other science students? Or do we sign up earlier?

PostSubject: Re: Elective List   Elective List EmptyWed Jun 09, 2010 6:03 pm

Yes, unfortunately you have to wait until Sunday, June 27th. (Mark this date on your calendars!!)

SOLAR opens at midnight. So make sure you cancel all parties on the Saturday (seriously), and be at your computer on MUGSI on midnight with your top choice each semester as well as a back-up ready, constantly attempting to sign in until you get in (it might take 300+ attempts before SOLAR lets you in, because everyone will be clogging the system at the same time... you might have to wait until 3 or 4 in the morning on Sunday before you can finally choose your courses).

Process: Log on to MUGSI --> Log on to SOLAR (if you don't get into SOLAR on time you might have to log back onto MUGSI, as it times out) --> Choose Undergrad Course Selection for Fall/Winter 2010/2011 --> Select your courses and applicable tutorial/lab times through a drop down menu --> BE SURE TO ADD SCIENCE 1A00* first (otherwise it will say you're not qualified for ISCI-1A24) --> Select all other courses you desire, and do it fast, otherwise you WILL be timed out and lose all progress.

This is the best and ONLY way to guarantee you get the iSci Lab Section you like, as well as the electives you like.

If you wait even a day, you will likely be locked out of a lot of options, because all the engineers/health scis/soc scis/humanities will be filling up the courses in the meanwhile. Also, some of these may already be full as 4th, 3rd, and 2nd year students have all already made their picks.

**Science 1A00 is a Lab Skills course required for all Science students. (I think there's an online component as well as three Skills Labs you need to sign up for in the first couple of weeks... this all occurs separately from iSci). It is pass/fail and will not count towards grades in any way. Don't worry about this yet.. just remember to sign up for it!

so i get how we have to register SCIENCE 1A00, but how about HTH SCI 1BS0?? we have to register that one as well right????

also i dont know if this is really related or not. But if you want to catch up with sciences and information for next year, i remember there is an online thing where we can learn necessary information for each subjects, do we have to register for that? or is that something completely different???
thanks Smile

Also, just a reminder to incomers that you don't HAVE to take an elective if you don't want to. To be considered a full time student, you must be registered in 4 courses a semester (12 units), which iSci satisfies.
At the same time, to graduate iSci (and any other honours program) you need to have 120 units, which equals to 30 units a year. So, basically, if you don't take an elective this year, you will have to make it up at some point.

When I went to another university for my first "first year", I actually took the math I needed in the summer leading up to my first semester, so I would only have to handle 4 courses in the fall to ease the transition. If you were planning to take lin alg, and you live in the Hamilton area, this might be a cool option for you (although I don't know if lin alg is offered in the summer semester).

Also, several iSci's, myself included, did not take an elective in second term of this year for varying reasons. I found that iSci, being a very diverse course, provided me with enough variety, and I didn't miss having an elective at all.

Mind you, I do recommend taking an elective in both semesters, because you will have to take those courses at some point, it's always good to diversify, and you can meet people outside of iSci. I just wanted to post a reminder that if you find you aren't enjoying your electives, or if you are having a hard time managing your time, you do have options.

Last year, we had to register for HEALTHSCI 1BS0, which is a biosafety course. Again, pass/fail only and it doesn't count towards your average or anything; this course only has an online component (one quiz). I contacted Sarah moments ago about whether or not you have to take 1BS0, so I will keep you up to post.

For the economics course, what do you mean by annoying? Is it like boring, or annoying cuz it's hard with annoying assignments. Also, do you know anything about the media course?

Hey, don't let my bias sway you too much -- if you enjoy economics, you should take the class.

They became annoying because they became more of an annoyance rather than a class that I enjoyed going to. It was kind of just one of those courses that you want to skip and just do the online assignments for -- which isn't really learning. Most of this is probably based on the huge class sizes for the class (500+), and there is NO tutorial for the course, just either 3 1-hour lectures or one long 3-hour evening class (which in my opinion makes a difference, you will appreciate tutorials for their intimate learning experience)

If you're highly motivated, then the class might be good for you otherwise.

And sorry, most of these courses were not available for our choosing last year, so I don't know much about MMEDIA 1B03, but check out:

http://www.macinsiders.com/showthread.php/media-1b03-18393.html?t=18393 (A review of the course by someone else on the official MAC Forums)

http://www.sundialmedia.com/SDMC/mac/MM_1B03_SHYBA.pdf (A course outline of the class, note this is from 2009 not 2010 -- but the content should generally be the same)

You should have had some exposure (high school class or extra-curricular like yearbook, AV club is probably sufficient) to graphic design, or at the very least feel comfortable picking photoshop, fireworks, and dreamweaver up (which are two pretty intuitive programs). It's meant to be an introductory course, so if you've taken advanced photography/photoshop courses or have used these programs as part of your job, you might find the course too easy. It also seems like you don't need these programs installed on your computer (though it would be advantageous), as there are many computers on campus with these. Overall, I think the experience gained in this would help immensely with the iSci projects that involve some visual component.

Otherwise, it looks like things are mainly project-based, so if you're willing to put in hard work in the class, you should be able to do well.

Hey Ben, welcome to university! This is not like high school where you choose your top courses and guidance organizes it for you... you will be in charge of determining your own destiny. Because of this you have to work around time conflicts!! (Trust us, in 2nd year this becomes even more difficult as your electives must be required courses, so you need to develop good planning skills... and when courses are full this throws another monkey wrench into your plans)

Check out http://www.science.mcmaster.ca/isci/registered-students/course-timetable?start=2, the iSci timetable one of your TAs created.

Simple answer is: you are restricted to these electives because only these electives fit in your time slots. This is NOT a problem unique to iSci in anyway. Often, you will see 2nd or 3rd years in 1st year classes and this may be associated to timetable conflicts, where you instead have to take a course you wanted or are required to take in future years. In fact, because of this in many concentration options for iSci you WILL be doing this as to accommodate the unique schedule. But don't worry too much, trust iSci and things will work out. This is not the program for people who like to micro-manage things, as you will get very stressed out.

https://isci.forumotion.com/isci-2014-f22/elective-course-outlines-t166.htm -- See this for detailed course outlines, such as microeconomics.

Lastly, if you really are a first year iSci student (and not an undercover health sci), check out the 'introduce yourself' thread to formally say hi to the iSci community! (Only then will I grant you "blue name" privileges on the forum, haha)

Hey Prateek. You said we will be in charge of determining our own destiny, but at the same time you said "this is not the program for people who like to micro-manage things". So we have to be in charge of whatever we want to do, but we cant really do it? How does that exactly work? Smile Sorry, i am having a bit of confusion
.....aha crap, im one of those people who likes to "micro-manage" things. Hope it changes Smile

...also, i was just wondering...for all the courses we take (both compulsory and elective), once we finish them, does the website allow you to see which credit you have??

haha lol undercover health sci!! Why would health scis lurk iSci page?

Haha, good point. If you really are confused, what I'm trying to say is that nobody is going to do things for you, you have to kind of learn the ropes for yourself (though us second years and iSci admin will be there to help you)... but while you're doing this you will encounter roadblocks, so you have to be versatile and not be too concerned with small things, but just work towards the big picture in your academic pathway. Hope that clears it up.

AND YES, if you micro-manage things you will be a disaster to work with in group projects, you must learn to adapt! You need to find the balance and learn the role you'll best fit in in each unique group you work in (Group work is a huge part of iSci!!!).

Yes, you will be able to see your "Degree Audit" to see the courses you have registered for, as well as the "interim marks" (if a full year course), and "final marks" on the Mac 12 point scale.

Back on topic, I've heard a bit about the History courses from someone who's taken both, and she really enjoyed both!

I think it could fit really well with the iSci program. You have to look at the past, to know how to change the future Razz

So ive bin looking at the elective list. Do any of you know which courses are not too work intensive, as in not ****loads of readings and just generally not too heavy a workload. I want stuff I'm interested in but really its not worth it to put a lot of effort into an elective given the huge workload in isci. Right now I was looking at like: History 1A03 (Renaissance Europe), Classics 1B03, Philos-1D03 (Philosophy and the Sciences), Philos-1B03
(Philosophy, Law, and Society, and maybe one of the economics courses. Does anyone know anything about any of these and how they compare? Thanks

Hello Ben,
I know that a bunch of these courses iScis couldn't take last year because of scheduling conflicts (I too wanted to take Renaissance Europe but sadly it didn't fit). If you search these course codes and/or titles on MacInsiders you'll probably get some good reviews from students, or you can pose the same question on the MacInsiders forum. http://www.macinsiders.com/

choose linear algebra.

you may need it in future years, and the information you learn may be useful even if you are planning to pursue biology or chemistry.. micro-economic you will not need unless you are planning an economics minor, and i don't think the information is as applicable

I agree with prateek. I have taken both courses and I found that Microeconomics was useless and I got a 10 without going to most of my classes. it was a boring class in which a woman who looks slightly like senator palpatine (the emperor) stated the obvious and insulted your intelligence by claiming that grade 12 calculus concepts are too hard for first years. linear algebra is interesting, easy, and useful. it exposes an area of math in which many people have little experience. I enjoyed Linear Algebra, and am now taking linear algebra 2, and hopefully I will eventually take 3. then again I am an iSci/math major so I am a bit biased.

I WISH I COULD HAVE! Philosophy 1D03 was not available to us, but it sure sounds cool. it was my first choice for electives last year before I found out that it conflicted with iSci 1A24 in 2009-10. I know that others have taken intro philosophy so they may be able to give you an impression of what 1st year uni philosophy is like.
as for anthro 1Z03 people have taken it and seemed to enjoy it.

unfortunately I didn't take math 1B03 with dr. Nicas, and therefore cannot offer an opinion. Although, i will say the course can be quite interesting IF you're into math and you have a decent professor. on ratemyprofessors, Dr. Nicas is highly recommended so if you can do it term 2 it is a good idea, but if there is an elective you would like that is in term 2 only then you should take it.

From what I hear, MATH 1B03 is not that hard. So if you want to take a really cool elective in term 2, then do that instead of trying to take 1B03 with Dr. Nicas.

Haha if only there were any electives at all available to take... so far all I've been able to register for is MATH 1B03 1st term, which (from the comments above) I'm feeling decidedly better about, but I still have no 2nd term elective, and even though SOLAR re-opened today, I couldn't get into anything...it's really weird as friends of mine going to other universities have had no problems at all with registering for courses.
