i am genuinely tempted by the iSci program, but I have also been accepted in the Nanotechnology Engineering program at Waterloo. Both mesh with my interests, so it comes down to the little things, and I am having a very tough time choosing between the two. Is iSci mindblowingly awesome?

Hey,

Those are definitely two very different fields. Most of us here would agree that iSci is awesome, but that's mainly because it suits our interests, our style of working, and most of us like the solid and wide background that iSci provides.

In your case, I'd really take a look at which subject 'fits' you better. I know that nanotech eng. at Waterloo is a great program, I have a couple friends there who are really enjoying it. From what I understand, that subject itself is very interdisciplinary as well. Within iSci, to be clear, you are unable to take engineering courses.

The two things I would look at most in order to make your decision is if you're more of an engineer or more of a scientist, and also compare Waterloo to McMaster, to see which university suits your needs more.

Every decision is tough, don't be persuaded by the biases and opinions on this forum, because I know both programs are great, and really choose the one that feels more right for you!

My biggest concern with iSci is what I would do with the degree after I graduate. I know that alot of the students in iSci want to be become doctors or go to graduate school, and thats not something that I particularly want. With engineering I can likely get a job with my BA and maybe get a MBA in the future but with iSci I may have to go to graduate school in order for me to get a job.

that is a very valid concern. I won't comment on getting a job with only an iSci degree because implying that it gives you any advantage or disadvantage compared to a regular BSc would be disingenuous, but I would say that if you want to get one degree and go into the workforce immediately engineering is the place to be. the advantage to iSci is that, if it fits you, it can be an amazing experience and be more informative and broad than 99% of the other science degrees. we are all iScis because we love science (which is slightly different from engineering) and most of us are going to pursue careers in science, medicine and related fields. the issue however with pursuing a career in engineering is that you MUST have an engineering degree to get a PEng (become an engineer). if you are looking to do engineering in the future I would say that an engineering degree is a must, but if you are interested in science and want a career in science then iSci may provide a better basis. hope this helps. (BTW I am sorry for all the sci lit fails) also, I would like to comment that there are SOME engineering courses which are available as electives, but few...

Just to let you know, you can pursue an MBA even with a degree in iSci because Business schools don't have many prerequisites. Also, I have heard that some engineering programs at the graduate level accept students even if they don't have an engineering degree depending on what exact field of eng you want to go into. An example of such a program is Biomedical Engineering at McMaster (http://msbe.mcmaster.ca/graduate/entrance.html). This may not be as pertinent to you seeing as you are only considering nanotech.

Pick which one suits you best.

But here is a point to consider. It is usually better to start university general, and then focus in during post grad. This way you cover the basics and have a strong foundation in case you decide to change your interests.

good foundation implies useful buildings ..... the contrapositive of this statement is prooved by the "leaning tower of pisa".
