Some of the textbooks we used in first year iSci may be used again in second year. I know this is the case for our math textbook, so it might be hard to find a student who wants to sell that particular textbook.

And I think I speak for all of iSci when I say that none of us are going to sell anyone our midterms or tests.

Haha I didn't mean to step on any toes... I just noticed that a lot of people are posting on various websites (mac insiders, facebook, etc) about selling textbooks and many of those happened to include midterms.
Would you suggest buying all of the textbooks that will be outlined for us directly from titles? Since someone said that the books used for first year were also used for second.
Also, are the textbooks unique to isci? Or do we use some of the same ones, for example the book for Bio 1A03? My parents are urging me to try to find used books but I'm not sure how to figure out which ones will be suitable.
Sorry for all the questions! I just want to make sure hahah Razz

Textbooks .... don't worry too much about them right now. I started worrying in the last week of August and I got most of my textbooks from upper year students on MacInsiders, Facebook, etc. I would recommend staying away from brand new textbooks from the uni bookstore because they are quite expensive.

The textbooks will most likely not be unique to ISCI 1A24... you will be using the standard books for chem, bio, math, physics, etc... Do wait until the book list is released, just to be sure though ----> I am saying this because you may be using a newer edition for the Chemistry and Biology books. If you have other questions, let us know.

Most of the people that sell their midterms and tests with their textbooks are upper years who know they will have no need for their testing materials. Because we're only going into second year, I think I can speak for most people when I say, we will likely need to reference these tests when doing second year course work and thus don't want to get rid of anything that may prove useful.

Also, I fully agree with Fahim that this isn't something you need to worry about right away. You will get ample time to search for textbooks once the list is up. Still, the list is divided into "required" and "suggested" readings. The "required" ones you have to get, whereas the "suggested" ones are up for your discretion. I didn't buy any of last year's "suggested" readings and got along fine because we had copies in iStudy, but the books may not be available to you during crunch time.

I bought almost all used books from Life Sci, Physical Sciences, and Health Sci students because there is a lot of overlap in course content. This will make finding used copies tonnes easier. In the future you'll want to use this link: http://icbb.sellmytextbooks.org/members/17/index.cfm?index=CLASSIFIEDS and click on "Search Classifieds".

The textbook list will be released on Friday, August 6, 2010. Textbooks will be listed by course here: http://titles.mcmaster.ca/text/departments.htm. Enjoy the last few weeks of summer!

My Opinion (take it with a grain of salt):

LOVRIC - CALCULUS FEAR NO MORE - you don't really need it as there will be sufficient review at the beginning of the course to get you going; alternatively, there is an online version of it from 2007 I believe (http://www.math.mcmaster.ca/lovric/rm.html)
PLUMMER - PHYSICAL GEOLOGY AND ENVIRONMENT - not a bad resource to have for the Earth Science component of ISCI 1A24; there will be copies in the iStudy for you or you can borrow from your peers; I didn't buy this but thinking back, I think I should have
STEWART - MULTIVARIABLE CALCULUS SOLUTION MANUAL - we did not do much multi-variable calculus last year, so don't worry about this one; if you do work with functions of more than one variable, that will take place in term 2 so don't worry about this item just yet.
STEWART - CALCULUS ET SINGLE VARIABLE SOLUTION MANUAL - depend on how comfortable you are with calculus/math; wait until school starts and then see if you would benefit from this item; personally I did not buy either of the calculus solution manuals and I did fine
ZINSSER W - ON WRITING WELL - the Scientific Literacy component of 1A24 will be changing for fall 2010 from what I understand, so wait until school starts to figure out if you need it; personally, I think this book is written really well - entertaining and definitely teaches you a think or two about writing; when I get the time, I will probably read it cover to cover Smile

- Hope this helps!

I agree with Fahim.

Wait for Sci Lit, I'm not sure if they'll even use the Zissner book this year.

For Calculus solutions... I don't even think we used the multivariable one first year, and I seldom used the solution manual (if I ever did I would ask a friend in iSci)... plus, in math, there was no problem getting an older edition of the textbook, which you might be able to find for significantly cheaper.

For Plummer, I would recommend it... it's a good resource for assignments, and understanding some of the more in depth concepts. (Or at least make a friend you can borrow one from)

No idea for the Lovric book -- but I think it's meant more for students who are not strong in calculus and need a refresher, another one I'd wait for.

I'm going to go against Fahim and Prateek on Plummer. I found a copy in iStudy to be more than sufficient, as long as you don't leave assignments for the last minute when everyone else wants it too. You can always get it later if you decide you need it.

Make sure you consider your own individual learning style when you're deciding which textbooks to buy! If you're someone who learns best by reading and making notes on your own, you should consider getting most of the textbooks. If you're someone who learns best by listening in lectures and discussing material with your classmates, the textbooks may not be as important to you.

And, as you can see by the somewhat conflicting (yet very useful) advice above, everyone really is unique when it comes to textbooks. =P

Definitely agree with Adam 100% there

^Just as a heads up -- I think iSci might be making the earth sci textbook mandatory, so stay tuned... we're gonna have 2 official TAs for the earth sci component, so it may be more formalized (this is because iSci is losing Luc).

I would still recommend getting all textbooks, but if you're concerned about price/having too many, i would actually recommend passing on the bio textbooks. I used those less than I used the earth sci textbook. And at least for bio it seemed that studying from the slides was the most useful.

umm it does to a certain extent, the newer edition will be what the profs are referring to and what publishers do is change aroudn section numbers/page numbers for certain topics so that ppl with the old edition have a harder time following. This will matter in certain subjects more htan others; I can see a physics or math textbook being perfectly fine with the older edition as you just need to look up certian topics like magnetism/quantum/derivatives/integrals. It's really your choice but profs will always refer to the newer textbook.
