Hey all, so here's the info I promised to post:

Putnam math competition:

-Its basically a really tough but awesome math competition thats going to be held on Sat Dec 4, from 10 am to 6 pm with a 2 hour break. Registration is free, the deadline is supposedly Friday October 8 (this friday!) so register ASAP! Do so by emailing:

Dr. Zdislav V. Kovarik, kovarik@mcmaster.ca and/or
Dr. Eduardo Martinez-Pedroza, emartinez@math.mcmaster.ca

The contest is open to undergrads from Canada and the US who haven't yet gotten a degree and haven't written the Putnam 4 times. I'm assuming you all are eligible; if not, then you probably already knew about the Putnam and will likely be a child prodigy/genius.

There are weekly coaching sessions that you can randomly show up to if you want, held Tuesdays 6:30-8:00 pm from September 28 to November 30, 2010 in room HH/312. The people/profs there to help you are quite awesome! I'll probably be there most Tuesdays too...

For previous questions and solutions (I highly recommend you try the problems and not look at the solution until you've solved the problem), go to:
http://amc.maa.org/a-activities/a7-problems/putnamindex.shtml and scroll down.

Fields Undergraduate Network:

-its essentially a series of (short and awesome) workshops on math aimed at undergrads interested in math. You'll get to meet other cool people like you in math! Topics covered in the last meeting included Chaos theory/topological dynamics and extending the concepts of limits. The last workshop was on analysis, the next one will be on geometry. I highly recommend you check it out, even if you aren't going into math (like me).

The next workshop will be on Saturday October 23, 2010 (10 am) at U of T BA1190 (Bahen Center on St George St just behind Sanford Fleming I believe). If you need directions by car/bus/train, definitely contact me. I'll talk to the Math and Stats people and see if they have a ride or something.

For more info, go to: https://sites.google.com/site/funw2010/. If you're (even slightly) interested, definitely tell me so I can give you more info about registration and stuff.
