PostSubject: Re: Introduce Yourself iSci '15    Introduce Yourself iSci '15 EmptyWed May 11, 2011 11:53 pm

Hi, I'm Melissa Ling (as you probably saw from the left).
I've decided to write my introduction in a blob, forgive me for being the combo breaker. So here goes!

I'm usually not a morning person, I despise coffee (but tea & hot chocolate is awesome (actually anything chocolate is great (yay triple bracket!))), and I procrastinate like there's no tomorrow (<-see what I did there? Wink)

I'm part of my school's Chamber Choir, Concert Choir (piano accompanist), Senior Concert Band, Science Club, Prefects, and FIRST Robotics Team (yea, I realize I sound like a complete nerd study ). Actually, robotics is what I've been the most involved with these past two years, and if you meet me, it is usually what I end up talking about. (You'll see what I mean come September).

I also play soccer in the summer (except this year I'm going to Shad instead), and do ballet and jazz dance throughout the year. I used to play the violin, but I stopped taking lessons and exams about two years ago. I'm also a big fan of musicals!

Favourite Food: pi (sorry guys, I just had to Razz)

One more thing, I'm in love with the iSci program and can't wait to meet you all in the fall!! Very Happy

Random last thought:
alien <- yay aliens! these emoticons are quite awesome I must say

Haha I'm going to UNB too!
I actually heard about Shad Valley from the iSci website; it was under their 'interesting links' section, and I thought it sounded great. I kind of wish I heard about it earlier so I could do it in Grade 10 or 11 though.
Hearing this from friends is now a common occurance: "What are you doing this summer? Oh wait, I remember... you're going to Nerd Camp!!" 8-)

Oh! I have a math joke! (You specifically said Calculus, so I'm going to hope you took AP calculus. Otherwise this won't make sense)
So. x^2 and e^x are at a party. x^2 notices that e^x is just sitting by itself. x^2 asks e^x "Why are you just sitting by yourself?". e^x replies "well, I've tried to integrate before, but it just never seems to get me anywhere".

Sad
Unfortunately my school doesn't have IB or AP anything, so I'm stuck doing regular calculus, which doesn't cover integrals.
But if you're into amusing Calculus-related things, check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqwC41RDPyg&feature=player_embedded

if it makes you feel better melissa, my school doesn't have IB or AP either, so we'll be behind together Razz my calculus class is full of jokes of a completely different manner (which is what happens when there are only 5 girls in the class...) anyone else have this problem? I find it kind of annoying in calculus but in physics it was fun. There's nothing better then creaming guys in physics Very Happy

Hmm. It's a pretty even split in my calculus and physics classes (the AP physics class only had 5 girls though). We were definitely outnumbered in Chem though (there were four of us and we sat in a corner). That was fun.

Uhhm. In terms of the partying scale I'd say a 1 would be someone who hardly ever parties (I gave myself 0 because I don't drink OR go to parties (except for the occasional birthday party)). I guess a 10 would be a "hard core-partier. Partying is your life. You eat (party food), you sleep (at parties), you dream (of parties), you party (at parties). Party is really starting to seem like a really odd word. I might need an intervention.

I'm actually quite worried that I'll be really behind in content come September compared to all the IB and AP kids Sad Hopefully the gaps in my knowledge aren't too large..

I've never noticed a huge difference in the girl to guy ratio in my classes, but our school is pretty big compared to some (I think we have about 1600+ students), and there is only the choice between University, Mixed, or College level courses.

Lol, I'm like most of you; I don't drink (drunken <- haha they have an emoticon for a drunk person on here) but I do go to birthday parties.
I highly doubt anyone in this program will be a 9 or 10 on the partying scale (thank you Daniella for your informative ranking criteria Very Happy), although I'm willing to eat my words (om nom nom) if someone proves me wrong Razz (Is that a challenge? maybe.. Wink)

If you want/need help, I'd be more than willing to offer it! Very Happy (This applies to anyone by the way) (I also somehow doubt I'm the only one who holds this position, I bet most people who've done AP/IB will be willing to help out those who haven't).

The drunk emoticon looks sort of like he's vaporizing. The red eyes are also sort of creepy. (I bet this emoticon is a ten on the scale Razz).

like Melissa, I just might have to take up all of the AP's help. Though my school is fairly good academically, I'm pretty sure that most people don't even know what AP and IB are... There's also the fact that we never finish the curriculm in first semester classes (thank the 6 snow days in the two weeks before christmas break and several after (not that I minded Wink )

I think that Nerdy T-Shirt Day might have to be a monthly thing, especially if they're from ThinkGeek! I used to have a lego evolution one before my little sister took it, and she also has several Doctor Who ones... my favourite shirt though is the 'Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock' t-shirt. Anyone seem that shirt? or played the game? I can always beat my brother because he always picks spock...

On the topic of Facebook, should we start an iSci 2015 group? looking back on last year's posts, I think that's what they did

Mary Kate, looks like you're not alone on the geeky t-shirt front. Very Happy I'd love to have a day for it! Quite possibly my favourite item of clothing is my Threadless "Discover Space and Time" hoodie...and I've been pining after a shirt I found in the Star Trek online store (oh man, now I sound EXTRA nerdy Razz) that says, "Damn it, Jim, I'm a doctor, not a hairdresser". I'm half hairdresser and half scientist so...yeah.

I'd like to amend my drinking level! Thing is I'm really weird, I only drink in the context of games (beer pong, shot chess, truth or dare, etc); depending on how playful others are and the degree of my competition, I can be from 0 to 9 heh

why do I do this? I see no point in drinking otherwise, this way things get a lot more interesting! jocolor
