Electives Empty
PostSubject: Electives    Electives EmptyWed May 18, 2011 12:46 pm

Hi Everyone, I was just looking at electives in different faculties. If a course has a prerequisite of Chem 1AA3, can you take it after first year isci?
Thanks Smile

Short answer, yes.

From the course calendar http://registrar.mcmaster.ca/calendar/current/pg1804.html :

ISCI 1A24 serves as an appropriate substitute for which any of the following are prerequisites: ARTS&SCI 1D06, ASTRON 1F03, BIOLOGY 1A03, 1M03, 1X03, CHEM 1A03, 1AA3, ENVIR SC 1G03, MATH 1A03, 1AA3, 1LS3, 1LT3, 1X03, 1XX3, PHYSICS 1B03, 1BA3, 1BB3, 1F03, 1L03, PSYCH 1X03, 1XX3.

Some of these codes are redundant (Ex, Math 1X03 itself is an antirequisite for Math 1A03; I've bolded the formal equivalencies) -- basically this is saying you get the credits for a full year of calculus, biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology... as well as half year of astronomy and earth science.

What this means, is that you are able to take any second year science course after iSci (except for those requiring the notable exception of linear algebra: MATH 1B03, and you will also not get accreditation for the first year kinesiology course). If interested in math/physics/med rad concentrations, highly recommend taking lin alg as an elective course, or in summer school after first year.

I'm not positive Prateek, but I'm pretty sure that the new first years won't get the astronomy prerequisite. I remember one of the profs mentioning this, not sure if anyone else does.

I vaguely remember this as well. I think they are also planning on removing the psych equivalency. Again, you can contact our program administrator at this link http://www.science.mcmaster.ca/isci/contact for more information.

BTW, nice profile pic Lori!

According to the undergraduate calendar, students will no longer get the astronomy equivalency, which is beneficial if you are interested in astronomy and want to take the course, but students still get the psychology equivalency, which makes sense because first year psychology is needed for the PNB concentration. But if anyone is concerned I would recommend talking to Sarah Robinson.

Oh, and because I should cite my sources/maybe someone wants to take a look at the undergraduate calendar, it's available here (look under course listings):

http://registrar.mcmaster.ca/CALENDAR/2011-12/index.html

It's slightly confusing because under the entry for iSci the equivalencies aren't listed, but if you are wondering if iSci covers a specific course, my suggestion is to look up the course. If it says its not open to students in ISCI 1A24, that means it's covered by iSci.

Thanks for the links and clarification Lori and Charles!!!

Yeah, I posted an outdated link -- it appears now that astronomy will not be an antirequisite. (Which in a sense is good, because now iSci students can actually take the first year astronomy course as an elective Razz)

This new listing is a lot more clear/accurate. Once again, these are only formal prerequisites. I could easily see students being able to take courses without the prerequisites within the sciences -- so long as you get a waiver from the professor.

Yeah...it's really easy to get a course prerequisite waived...
