Hello,
I am considering applying to iSci this year and I had a few questions. I was wondering ...

1. What is the supplementary application like? What kind of questions do they ask?
2. What kind of students get into the program? Do you have to be extremely well-balanced to get in?
3. How many students applied last year, and how many got in?
4. Do you have to have any research experience to get into this program?

Thanks for the help!

Hello! First of all I'd like to welcome your geekiness by the use of the first nine digits of pi as your username.

1. The supplementary application is tool for the selection committee to determine whether you are the right match for the program and if it is for you! The questions asked are used to gather a better understanding of your interests, as well as your suitability - they are generally pretty straight forward and require a maximum of 200 words each.

2. We are pretty diverse in terms of study habits, specific topics of interest, hobbies. Balance is certainly an asset for anything! I'm not sure I could say that there is any specific type of student for iSci asides from one that is motivated.

3. Not sure of actual statistics - I've heard some thrown around -like one in ten

4. There might have been one or two people a year which had experience but for the rest of us 40 odd students we hadn't had any - asides from labs in high school!

Awesome! Thanks for the help!

Also, on the McMaster iSci website, it says that a maximum of 60 students will be selected each year. I've been doing a lot of reading on this forum and to me, it sounds more like 40-45 students are getting in each year. Have they changed the maximum number of students getting in, or do they never get 60 qualified applicants each year?

By the way, I love pi Smile. How many digits have you memorized?

keep in mind not all accepted students end up choosing iSci. That being said previous years have had about 40 students who accepted and began at the beginning of the year. This upcoming year there will be approximately 54 first year students - we're having larger percentages of candidates accepting our offers I believe.

I only knew the first eight! You're adding to my knowledge

There is something called piphilology which basically is the use of mnemonic techniques to remember pi.

One of my favourites is this poem:

Pie
I wish I could determine pi
Eureka, cried the great inventor
Christmas pudding, Christmas pie
Is the problem's very center.

So, the letters in each word corresponds to a digit in pi.

i.e. Pie (3), I (1), wish (4), I (1), could (5), determine (9), pi (2) etc. gives 3.141592
