"Combining Two Cultures" Conference- Feedback Empty
PostSubject: "Combining Two Cultures" Conference- Feedback   "Combining Two Cultures" Conference- Feedback EmptyTue Jan 12, 2010 11:18 pm

In a lecture last week, Carolyn mentioned the "Combining Two Cultures" Conference, presented by the Arts and Science Program. She will be a keynote speaker at this event, and 5 iSci students are invited to serve as delegates to the conference

The conference will take place here, at McMaster University, on the weekend of January 23-24, 2010. The purpose of the conference can be found at the website www.combiningtwocultures.ca. It is generally meant to collaborate and share ideas about interdisciplinary education at the undergraduate level.

The iSci Society is responsible for collecting feedback for Carolyn to use in her keynote speech, as well as to select the delegates for the conference.

Feedback:

Carolyn has requested that student should give feedback in the form of 3 "pro's" of the program and 3 "challenges" you have encountered in the program. The society would like to use this as an opportunity to utilize our forum to gather this feedback from all interested students. Under "General Issues", a feedback discussion will be posted. If you are not comfortable providing your feedback in a public manner, you may email it to the society email or to any of the executive members.

We will request that all feedback be given by this Friday, the 15th.

Please use this board as a submission area for you feedback. Thanks everyone!

Here is the information on how to become a delegate for the conference:

In the discussion at today's meeting, it was decided that the delegates be chosen by the iSci Society in a lottery process, to ensure fairness. The executive has compiled a list of criteria that potential delegates should consider before applying:

All delegate applicants should:
- be comfortable discussing topics with strangers, upper years, and professors
- have an interest in the iSci program and its interdisciplinary nature
- have a desire to learn from other interdisciplinary programs
- be capable of bringing discussion results back to iSci and communicate these ideas thoroughly
- be involved/interested in the iSci community
- be able to commit to possible briefings and debriefings before and after the event
- be able to have a FULL 2 DAY commitment on the weekend of January 23-24, from 9:30-5:30 each day
- be able to explain the program and its purpose to those outside of iSci

If you are interested in being a delegate, and you feel you meet these requirements, please send the iSci Society an email with the subject " Conference Delegate Application" submitting your name before NOON on Thursday, January 14. I know this is soon, but Carolyn would like the list of student ASAP.

Thanks Everyone!

Just an addendum to the "Combining Two Cultures," this will be a great opportunity, and any interested student who satisfies above criteria should really apply ASAP to iscisociety@gmail.com. All interested students will be placed in a pool, where a subset of 5 will be selected to go through random draw.

Also, for responding for the feedback, which is MANDATORY!!! Please check out "iSci Feedback" in the communications board and post back or pop an e-mail to the iscisociety@gmail.com address. I cannot stress the importance of both of these above things.

Personally, I would't consider the feedback to be "mandatory". If you are not comfortable providing your feedback, that is okay. At the same time, we should take this, a request from the DIRECTOR of our program for feedback, as something not to be taken lightly.

Being a direct request from our director, our feedback is very important, and lack of giving feedback will not reflect well on us as a group. Additionally, this feedback is necessary for Carolyn's keynote address at the conference, and as her success in such endeavors is related to the success of the program, we should be trying to help with our feedback.

If you can submit your feedback by this FRIDAY, that would be very helpful, as Carolyn needs it ASAP. Thanks Everyone!
