| Hey Everyone, I have been unsuccessful as of yet in registering for two elective courses, all I have right now is Math 1B03 1st semester, but hopefully there will be another sometime soon. Since there are very few electives available to take in 2nd semester, it looks like my second elective (if I even get one) will also be in the 1st semester. How difficult is that to do? Is it hard to make up for an elective I missed in later years? This registration process has been such a hassle. | |

| I would not recommend taking two electives in the same term. Also, I'm not even sure if SOLAR would allow you to do that. My advice is to keep trying. You have until January to find a spot, and if you keep trying from now until then, I think you have a really good chance of getting a spot in something. If you don't take an elective in term two at all, you will need to make up those three units at some point. In my opinion, the best way to do this would be to take a course during the summer. I hope this helps. I'm sure other iSci students can add to my suggestions. | |

| From what I understand, there is a lot of movement of classes come September (students switching in and out of classes). You should have better luck then, and since it's for 2nd semester, you won't miss any classes. | |

| In your unique situation, I would definitely contact Sarah Robinson, she will have the best advice and the logistics knowledge to be able to handle this.
Otherwise, SOLAR will allow up to 18 credits each semester (but only 30 credits total), currently without any permissions. I know people who do the 4/6 split in first year so they can get used to the adjustment of university in first semester. I guess it could work the other way as well.
I would recommend for the time being, to fill up your schedule so you have 30 credits -- even if this means taking that extra one first semester -- only for the reason that it will balance out your financial statement to what it will really be like, to avoid future complications with adding/dropping courses... it will also affect OSAP too.
And as Myles said, there will be a huge turnover during September, where you should be able to get a spot, and realistically -- some 1st years will drop university, change programs, fail and have to retake a course, etc... so spots will definitely open up 2nd semester, no concerns there.
As to if you wanted to take the 2 electives first semester, and 0 second semester. I don't think it's a bad idea, there are pros and cons, and it may be the right decision for you (if for example the two electives you like are both first semester). You would have to work harder first semester -- but second semester will be lighter.
If you want to make up a missed elective later, (I know many iSci students have done this), it is not difficult at all. Expect a summer school semester as your easiest option to make it up, or overloading in 2nd or 3rd year (which may work better, as you can take a more specialized course instead). The only caveats to this is firstly, you're just putting off the work to later. Secondly, if Med School (and other grad programs) is in your sights, not taking a full course load first year may cause complications, depending on where you apply. Most grad programs simply require the Honours B.Sc, so that's fine. But in Med Schools, in UofT, the weighting system they use will work at your disadvantage (it will only allow you to drop your lowest marks if you take a full course load during fall/winter), Western Med School will not consider you, Ottawa requires you to immediately make it up in summer school, and others may comment on it during an interview, etc. | |

| Interesting, about the med schools at least. I dont think that 2 electives in one semester is a great idea...maybe i should try and get into the Math 1B03 in 2nd term. That would solve a lot of my problems | |

| I would recommend looking at the course timetable first to make sure that it is possible to get term 2 1B03 without any conflicts before dropping term 1 1B03. if you already know that, I apologize for wasting your time. | |
