Earth Science Concentration

Hey guys, not sure who else is deciding on the earth sci/enviro sci concentration but I have some really important information regarding scheduling:

2GI3 is semester 1 and there are a few possible options for lab times, this one is required.

Of the 4 "choices" for the second required course, only 2B03 (soils) fits in semester 1, and 2Q03 (geochemistry; with the recent change in the course schedule) fits in semester 2. 2A03 and 2W03 will have conflicts.

The two above are both good options. However, much (but not all) of the content in 2Q03 will be covered in the biochemistry content in iSci... so Luc has advised that the course is only required if you are planning to take courses in the future in which 2Q03 is a prereq (I believe there are 2 or 3 courses in which this is the case).

For me, I am planning to take 2I03 (earth processes; another course required for many courses as a prereq) this year in semester 2, and will take try to take 2W03 next year... although this does not follow the concentration layout, I have gotten the OK for this, as long as I promise to do one of the 4 on the list next year. I'm sure anyone else will have the similar approval if they choose this path as well.

That might be a good idea...i was getting annoyed at how none of the courses except for the soils fit (didn't realize geochem fit now, might take that). I'm also planning to take 2I03, and i was planning on taking 2W03 but i guess we'll have to wait for next year.
Which other earth sci course(s) were you thinking about taking (i guess besides GIS)? I might take the soil, geochem, gis and earth processes, but i dunno are you taking any non-earth sci electives? maybe i should, but i wouldn't know which to take

Hey yeah, I'm only planning to take earth processes and GIS this year... for electives I wanted to take Genetics and Big Questions just for fun, which could help me plan out a minor in either Origins or Biology in the future if I decide to. It looks like it's possible to do a minor with the earth sci concentration if I plan my courses well enough. If you're planning other courses, probably look at the minor programs in departments that you like and choose from there... I think almost all science minors, and probably even some soc sci minors could be done. Otherwise depending on what direction in earth sci you're going, there's some good ecology courses in upper years that go well with the environmental geoscience side... as well as some math and physics courses that go well with the geophysics side of things, even some of the chem/biochem courses look useful if you're into the geochemistry side of things too. Also if you're looking into the 'GIS certificate' you need to choose specific courses to be able to gain that qualification.

Yeah, 2W03 seems important though, I think it should be taken next year. And 2B03 doesn't seem that important. I was looking into 3B03 (an evening course) this year second semester, as we would be able to take it just from having ecology in iSci, so that's an option too.

I've also heard bad things about the geochemistry prof, which is why I'm trying to avoid it if possible (and will try to use iSci biochem as the prereq in future years instead).

Ya i'm thinking i don't want to take geochem I'm not sure what I should fill it with...I want to take intro to enviro issues but it's first semester and i still want to take the soils one. It's not super important but i noticed there's courses that hydro is a prereq to that you can have soils instead

There's a water course (2WW3) that might be good as an easy elective (it's not even a prereq for anything... so i dunno if it would even be worth it) There's no labs or anything with it though, which is nice.

Which direction of earth sci are you thinking of going? I like more of the geology stuff or geophysics stuff, but i don't think i'll try to do a minor or anything.

i'm thinking of going the geology route, it looks sick!

also i heard 2WW3 is not useful information wise (and it doesn't count towards the earth/enviro sci concentration)... but yeah it would be good for an easy elective.

yeah hopefully the hydro (2W03) is first semester next year. from what i know if you're taking the prerequisite concurrently with the course you want to take, they'll usually let you in.
